WEST AFRICAN PERCUSSION: Drum + Dance Circle

Brendan Finnegan has studied drumming and dancing in Ghana, West Africa and developed a special drum and dance circle from his travels. Brendan teaches the particular rhythm of each instrument and these parts are played together to form a distinctive polyrhythm. While adept at leading drum circles with groups of all backgrounds, Brendan specializes in working with seniors and other special needs groups. Attendees will be given basic instruction and will play in a drum circle. Please remove all rings before playing.

The Roots of Afro-Latin Rhythms: Interactive Demonstration

Geraldo Flores, Latin percussionist with Afro Pana and the Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra, discusses the family of Afro-Latin rhythms and how these rhythms tell a musical history of the relationships between African, European and Native people in the New World. He presents various new world percussion instruments and rhythms and describes their African ancestors. The audience will have a chance to help Geraldo demonstrate the usage of the instruments.

FOUND SOUNDS: Craft + Play (for families/caretakers with children ages 5 and older, adult supervision is appreciated)

Artist Jaiquan Fayson and musician Amber Lewis will show families how to turn ordinary household objects into small percussion instruments. Families will have a chance to decorate the instruments then learn a basic rhythmic pattern with our percussionist. In this environmentally friendly workshop, old metal coffee canisters will be transformed into mini steel drums, small water bottles become maracas, and old shake bottles become shakers.

Electric Run with Jamaica Drum Jam Team

Join the Jamaica Drum Jam Team at the Electric Run, a night-time light and sound experience.

Electric Run is the World's Premier Nighttime 5k run/walk experience, where the participants are an integrated part of the show. Featuring immersive "Lands" of light and sound that transport the participant into an electric wonderland, Electric Run promises to transport the mind, body and soul to a new world in a healthy and drug-free way. Participants are encouraged to join in on the art by lighting up with glow sticks, LEDs and anything else their imagination can conjure up.

Glowing neon trees changing colors to match the music
Tunnels with dancing patterns and figures on the walls, ceilings, and floors
Lakes and rivers glowing in the other-worldly hues
Tunnels of light created by a rainbow of lasers
Glowing arches and columns
